Friar Douglas (John-Douglas) McMillan, OFM Conv.

This year’s Faculty Award is being given to Friar Douglas McMillan (also known as Friar John-Douglas) in recognition of his more than sixteen years of service at Bishop Grimes.

While at Grimes, Friar Douglas influenced many students. He was a member of the English Department. He taught English until 1990. During the 1989 – 1990 academic year, he served as the Assistant Principal, primarily tasked with discipline. From 1990 – 1997, Friar Douglas served as the Director of the Office for Black Catholic Ministries for the Diocese of Syracuse. In this role, he helped develop several programs for the African-American Catholic community, provided instruction for the Formation for Ministry Program for the diocese and worked with the Interreligious Council of Syracuse.

Friar Douglas returned to Bishop Grimes as a part-time faculty member in January of 1997 and fulltime in the Fall of 1998. He remained on the faculty until 2005 when he was assigned to Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

Brian Schultz – Treasurer of the Board of Trustees

Over the last decade, Brian has displayed his dedication to Bishop Grimes participating as an active member of the Advisory Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees, serving as the Treasurer and the Chair of the Finance Committee. Because of Brian’s commitment to the Board, the school’s finances have been stabilized. Brian has invested countless hours ensuring Bishop Grimes continues to operate with a balanced budget. Chair of the BG Board of Trustees, Hank Fust shares, “Brian Schultz’s dedication to Bishop Grimes on numerous fronts has to be commended. In particular, Bishop Grimes present balanced financial position is due in great part to the concerted effort of Brian Schultz bringing his financial expertise to bear on the school’s operations. I doubt that anyone has put in more hours’ day after day to turn Bishop Grimes into a financially stable organization.”

Furthermore, Brian is also extremely involved in the community. He is actively involved with the DeWitt Fire District as a Fire Commissioner and is on staff as the District Secretary. Brian serves on the Finance Committee at Holy Cross Parish in DeWitt, is Chairman of the Board at CENTRO, and a former Councilor on the DeWitt Town Board. Additionally, Brian was an active fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for over a decade.

 

 Jason Smorol ’87

Jason Smorol is the General Manager for the Syracuse Mets Triple-A minor league team and has been in this role for the past five seasons. The Syracuse Mets, formerly the Syracuse Chiefs, play at NBT Bank Stadium and have gained publicity and success due to the creative community engagement technique that Jason has employed. Promotions this season include themed days, sporadic giveaways, Dollar Thursdays, Fireworks Fridays, and Super Saturdays.

After graduating from Bishop Grimes Jason earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the State University of New York College at Fredonia and his Master of Sports Science degree with a focus on Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy.  Starting in 1993 he began his Minor League career in Watertown with future stops in Batavia and Staten Island.  He was the General Manager for Auburn Doubledays a Class-A Short Season affiliate for three seasons. During this time Jason increased attendance and the team captured three division titles. Following his experience with the Auburn Doubledays, Jason was an account manager at Hilti USA for over nine years.

Jason has also been an engaged alumnus and member of the community. He recently hosted 30th Reunion for the Class of 1987 and is always a generous donor to our annual Dinner & Auction.

 

 Cosimo ‘Coz’ Pagano ’71

A student form 1967-1971, Coz was involved as a student. He was a three-sport athlete participating on the football, wrestling, and track teams. He was also a member of Student Council, Junior Prom Committee and Senior Ball Committee. After graduating from Bishop Grimes, Coz earned his Associate’s degree from Hudson Valley Community College and his Bachelor’s degree from Potsdam State University in Information Technology. Coz worked one year at Norwich Pharmaceuticals before his tenure with MONY/AXA where he was employed from 1976-2012. Serving in a variety of positions, Coz worked in IT as a software developer, Database Analyst, Network Engineer, and Project Manager. He also managed the IT staff internationally for the company in Brazil. Coz is still currently consulting for AXA part-time.

Coz became more involved with Bishop Grimes once he retired in 2012. Initially, Coz helped Bishop Grimes create a database to help enhance communication with alumni. This database served as the platform and foundation for the information still utilized today. Coz helped to improve the technology and infrastructure of the school and served on the committee to rewire the school for our technology enhancements in 2016. Coz has also has served as a member of the Alumni Committee since its inception.
